Treatment

With my creation of a music video I have to insure that all relating products (digipack and poster) convey the same tone as the music video visually. My chosen song is ‘Stay Alive’ by Joze Gonzales; this song is of the indie pop genre. The song generates a sad tone with varying paces throughout; due to this I considered it ideal to create a narrative following this tone, in order to present this I decided to use flashbacks that tell a story of two main characters and their friendship that is being reflected upon by the main actor as the other one has fallen ill, this immediately shows it to link to the song’s lyrics and follows Andrew Goodwin’s theory that visual should match lyrics. This is also done in my performance aspect of my music video at the beginning and the end  of the video with my main performer singing whilst sitting in a waiting room with a clock also being shown linking to the ticking sound in the music, setting a steady beat (which will also aid editing of shots to follow the convention of changing on a beat).

To link the current story to the flashbacks I have chosen symbolic props and locations that will be used in the story throughout, for example there is a scene where the pair of friends are riding their bikes which then relates to the later scene where the main actor rides his bike quickly to get to the hospital the other is at.

In the creation of my digipack I wanted it to set the tone for the song whilst not spoiling the narrative as I intend the ending to be dramatic. Therefore I have used subtle symbolic shots such as of a church visited in a closing scene of the music video on the digipack that can be presented in the right tone due to colour alteration. I feel that colour is key in presenting a tone therefore I aim to use a light blue, crisp colour scheme as it represents the sadness the narrative portrays rather than bright, saturated colours that would convey happiness as ultimately the videos ending is not cheerful, making it harder hitting.

Another key aspect of the videos success comes from consideration of a target audience. Immediately fans of the indie genre will be a major appeal to the video and those who enjoy escapism through narrative in music videos may enjoy this. However my poster will be able to generate interest for the video as it will highlight the singer, so fans of his previous work will take an interest, however the visuals presented on the poster will be a key influence. Therefore I knew I must make the poster that looks professional and also eludes to the narrative, creating intrigue whilst not spoiling it. Symbolism can also be presented on a poster and I aim to do this by using heart beat symbols on the poster to represent the song title ‘stay alive’. It shall also relate to the digipack, making the associable through an interlinking image and the same pastel, crisp colours conveying the mood.
